Staying Warm: Resources and Support During Cold Weather

As temperatures drop, staying safe and warm becomes a top priority for everyone in our community. Thankfully, there are many resources available to help residents of West Orange and surrounding areas during cold weather. Whether you know someone who needs assistance or want to lend a helping hand, here is how you can make a difference. 


If You Know Someone Who Needs Help 

  • Healthy West Orange HUBB: This one-stop resource connects residents with local programs and services. From health and wellness programs to community support initiatives, it is a great place to start. Visit Healthy West Orange HUBB to explore available programs. 
  • Temporary Warming Centers: Orange County Government opens Temporary Warming Centers during periods of extreme cold to provide a safe and warm place for those without stable housing. Check the Orange County Newsroom for the latest updates. 

 

If You Want to Help 

  • Support the Homeless: Organizations like Matthew’s Hope are accepting donations to serve homeless populations during cold spells. Donations can be dropped off at Matthew’s Hope, 611 Business Park Blvd. #101, Winter Garden, FL 34787; Phone: (407) 905-9500. Items needed include: 
  • Sheets (preferably twin-sized) 
  • Pillows with cases 
  • Warm lightweight clothing 
  • Running/mesh-style shoes 
  • Cold-weather socks 
  • Boxer briefs 
  • Hand warmers 
  • Food items like cereal, healthy snacks, and Ensure nutrition shakes 
  • Bottled water 
  • Paper plates, bowls, and cups 
  • Laundry detergent and Lysol spray

Blanket Donations: Share extra blankets by donating them to the Christian Service Center. They have two convenient locations: Downtown Orlando, 808 W. Central Blvd., Orlando, FL 32805 or West Orange Campus, 300 West Franklin Street, Ocoee, FL 34761.

Donate gently used blankets, towels, and sheets to Orange County Animal Services, 2769 Conroy Road, Orlando, FL 32839-2162

Chilly weather can be tough on outdoor animals, including community cats. Resources like PetHelpful and Alley Cat Allies provide practical advice for creating temporary shelters and ensuring they have access to fresh water.
