In the heart of Horizon West, Florida, something has been gaining momentum since 2018. It’s not just about running; it’s about fostering a sense of community, promoting health, and above all, having a blast while doing it! Local Village of Bridgewater residents Sarah Ratzlaff  is the visionary behind this endeavor – Florida Running Company.

Sarah – a passionate fitness enthusiast with race planning experience – saw a unique need within the community. She wanted to provide a fun way for residents and families to be active, come together, and build connections. Thus, Florida Running Company was born, and it quickly became popular within Horizon West. From the beginning, Florida Running Company had a clear mission: to create unforgettable running experiences that encouraged people to get active, have fun, and connect with their neighbors. Sarah recognized the power of themed races and 5k events, which not only added excitement, but also motivated participants to embrace a healthy lifestyle. Some of her themed races include the 12K’s of Christmas, with a 5k and 12k option, or the Spring themed Hippity Hop 5k. All races also include a kid’s race option so members of the family at any age can get out and have fun!

Fun While You Run

One of the staples of Florida Running Company’s events is the emphasis on creativity and enjoyment. Sarah believes that dressing up, letting your inner child run free, and having a blast while running is a fantastic way to promote fitness. It’s not about how fast you can complete a race; it’s about making lasting memories with your family, friends, and neighbors. The community quickly embraced Sarah’s vision, and whether it’s a Thanksgiving themed Turkey Trot 5k, or a St. Patrick’s Day themed Lucky Charm 5k, the excitement is palpable at every event. Participants don their outfits and costumes with enthusiasm, and the laughter and camaraderie that fill the air are contagious.

At the core of Florida Running Company’s values is inclusivity. Sarah firmly believes that everyone should have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their running abilities. All paces are welcome at the races, creating an environment where both seasoned runners and beginners can come together, have fun, and encourage one another. Kids can even participate in 50 yard to 200 yard dash runs to earn medals as well!

A New Path

Then came the unexpected challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many businesses were struggling to adapt, Sarah saw an opportunity to continue her mission of bringing the community together. She pivoted to host virtual running events, providing a safe and engaging way for people to stay active and connected during the lockdowns. What sets Sarah apart is her commitment to the community; She offered these virtual events for free! The response was amazing, with up to 400 registrants joining in from around Horizon West.

Florida Running Company has continued to evolve, offering new and exciting themed races. In the 2023 – 2024 series, a new standout event has been added to the calendar. The Mother’s Day 5k, which celebrates the incredible mothers in our lives, offers a unique way to spend quality time with family. And for the chocoholics, the For The Love Of Chocolate 5k will be set at the picturesque Southern Hill Farms this year. Additionally, this year when participants complete two or more races they will receive a holiday race series award and swag!

Full Steam Ahead

As we look ahead to the future, it’s clear that Florida Running Company is more than just a race organizer; it’s a beacon of positivity and unity within Horizon West. With each race and event, they continue to inspire residents to lead healthier, more connected lives. Sarah and Florida Running Company help remind us all that fitness can be fun, that neighbors can become friends, and that the simple act of lacing up your running shoes can lead to a lifetime of memories.
