In November 2024, Orange County voters took an important step by approving a charter amendment that expands the number of commission districts from six to eight. This change aims to enhance representation for our diverse and growing population. To put this amendment into action, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners is launching a redistricting process to establish new district boundaries and integrate the two additional districts.

Be Part of the Change: Engage with the Redistricting Advisory Committee

To ensure community voices are heard during this transformative process, the Board has formed the 2025 Mid-Decennial Redistricting Advisory Committee. This committee is dedicated to guiding the redistricting efforts while encouraging community involvement through various opportunities:

  • Attend Public Meetings: Your voice matters! The committee will hold public meetings where you can share your thoughts, concerns, and ideas about the proposed district changes. This is your chance to help shape the future of governance in our community!
  • Connect with Your Neighbors: Gather with fellow residents to discuss how the new district boundaries can better reflect your needs and interests. Engaging with your community not only fosters a sense of belonging but also empowers everyone to work together for a common goal.
How the Redistricting Process Works

The committee has several key responsibilities that directly involve community participation:

  • Gather Community Input: As mentioned, public meetings will be held to ensure that the input from residents like you is collected and considered. This feedback will be crucial in shaping the committee’s recommendations.
  • Review Census Data: The committee will analyze the latest census data to understand population trends, ensuring that district boundaries reflect our community’s demographics accurately.
  • Propose Boundaries: The committee will draft proposals for the new commission districts and recommend adjustments to existing boundaries to ensure balanced representation.
  • Submit Recommendations: By September 2025, the committee will present a non-binding recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners, which will guide them in finalizing the new district boundaries.
Use Data-Driven Tools for Impact

Orange County’s redistricting process will utilize a data-driven approach with Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, allowing for detailed analysis of proposed boundary changes on demographics. This ensures that our community’s unique characteristics are represented in the new districts.

Get Involved by Submitting Maps

If you’re passionate about contributing directly, committee members can submit maps for consideration. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Create or Sponsor Maps: While only committee members can submit maps, you can collaborate with them to sponsor maps that reflect your ideas and community needs.
  • Meet Submission Deadlines: Sponsored maps must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. at least four business days before the next meeting to ensure they are considered.
  • Utilize Designated Software: Maps should be created using the software provided by the county’s consultant to maintain consistency.
Review and Discuss Proposals

Once maps are submitted, they will be reviewed and placed on the committee’s meeting agenda. This means you can stay updated on the progress and participate in discussions surrounding the proposed district boundaries.

Your Participation Matters!

The redistricting process in Orange County is a vital opportunity to enhance community representation and ensure that the needs of all residents are met. By attending public meetings and engaging with the Redistricting Advisory Committee, you can play an active role in shaping the future of governance in our county.
