Local Author Inspired by Horizon West Living Pens New Sci-Fi Novel

Summerport Resident Laura Schaefer Publishes Fourth Novel

Like many of us, Laura Schaefer was drawn to relocate to Horizon West because of her strong affinity for the Walt Disney World theme parks (Epcot, in particular) and fond childhood memories of wintertime Florida vacations. During these trips, she relished in the glorious sunshine, which wasn’t quite as abundant in her home state of Wisconsin.

Laura says moving to our area inspired her to write her latest middle-grade novel (for ages 10-14). “The Florida sun and the energy and ideas of the people here changed me for the better. I love the active outdoor lifestyle in Horizon West, and appreciate everyone I’ve met. I’ve been more productive and happier on the whole thanks to all of the Vitamin D and freedom from fighting snow and ice and months of gray skies.”

A resident of Summerport in Horizon West’s Village of Bridgewater since 2015, she and her family continue to visit Walt Disney World theme parks, which perpetuate the idea of dreaming about a better tomorrow. The advent of SpaceX and the ongoing work of NASA with frequent rocket launches visible from her home further inspired her to write what would become her fourth and latest novel, “A Long Way from Home.”

About “A Long Way from Home”

Twelve-year-old Abby has a lot to worry about: The news. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. And now moving to Florida for her mom’s new job at an aerospace company.

On the Space Coast, Abby meets two boys, Adam and Bix, who tell her they’re “a long way from home” and need her help. Abby discovers they’re from the future, from a time when all the problems of the 21st century have been solved. Thrilled, Abby strikes a deal with them: She’ll help them—if they let her come to the future with them. But soon Abby is forced to question her attachment to a perfect future and her complicated feelings about the present.”

More Than a Science Fiction Story

With its sci-fi feel, this title is quite a bit different from Laura’s previous works like “The Teashop Girls” or “Littler Women: A Modern Retelling.” She says, “it was the story that wouldn’t leave me alone.”

As a middle schooler, she loved reading science fiction, but actually writing a story in this genre took more than just inspiration.

“I had to build up to writing this kind of book, both at a craft level and at a life experience level. Becoming a mother led me to yearn to communicate a big idea to my daughter and to every young reader who might pick up this time-travel title: despite the giant size of our universe, you matter. You are capable of incredible things despite your struggles. And while you’re at it, think bigger.”

Laura added, ” I love the quote, ‘Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.’ Maybe even time travelers from the 23rd century!”

As is evident from her comments about the writing process, “A Long Way from Home” is more than just a sci-fi story; it carries with it important themes like self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making and mental health. Young readers and adults alike are already responding positively with fantastic reviews.

Our Horizon West Happenings team is thrilled for Laura! We hope that fellow Horizon Westers will find “A Long Way Home” as compelling, inspiring and helpful for processing coming-of-age topics as the early reviewers have found it to be.
