Local government might seem far removed from our daily lives, but it’s actually the level that has the most direct impact on our community. From our roads and schools to our parks and public safety, local decisions shape our lives. That’s why it’s crucial to be informed about the various positions within our local governments and how we can influence change. We recently had the chance to sit down with several local candidates including Bowen Kou, Anne Douglas, and Melissa Vickers- each running for an office listed below.

We didn’t interview them to create partisan promotion. We wanted to find out what each of the offices is responsible for, what they want you to know about the office up for election, and how your vote counts toward affecting change on a local level. Each candidate gave us insight into their unique journey to this moment in time as well as what drives their passion for public service.

• Public Defender: Public Defender is a critical component of a fair and just legal system. They ensure that all individuals, regardless of their financial means, have access to qualified legal representation and the opportunity to defend themselves against criminal charges.
