Your Community, Your Choice: A Guide to Local & State Government

Local government might seem far removed from our daily lives, but it’s actually the level that has the most direct impact on our community. From our roads and schools to our parks and public safety, local decisions shape our lives. That’s why it’s crucial to be informed about the various positions within our local governments and how we can influence change. We recently had the chance to sit down with several local candidates including Bowen Kou, Anne Douglas, and Melissa Vickers- each running for an office listed below.

We didn’t interview them to create partisan promotion. We wanted to find out what each of the offices is responsible for, what they want you to know about the office up for election, and how your vote counts toward affecting change on a local level. Each candidate gave us insight into their unique journey to this moment in time as well as what drives their passion for public service.

Understanding the Players

Local governments are made up of a diverse group of individuals dedicated to serving their communities.

Let’s explore a few key positions and their roles:

  • County Mayor: The head of the city government, responsible for setting policies and overseeing operations.
  • County Commissioners: Elected representatives who work with the Mayor to make decisions about local issues.
  • School Board Members: Oversee the operations of public schools and ensure quality education for all students.
  • Public Defender: Public Defender is a critical component of a fair and just legal system. They ensure that all individuals, regardless of their financial means, have access to qualified legal representation and the opportunity to defend themselves against criminal charges.
  • State Senator: State Senators are crucial players in shaping the future of their state. They are responsible for enacting laws, managing state finances, representing their constituents, and addressing local issues.

Your Role in Shaping the Future

Being informed about local government positions is the first step towards making a difference. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Research: Explore the different positions in your local government. Understand their responsibilities and the issues they are addressing.
  2. Engage: Attend town hall meetings, community forums, and candidate events. Listen to the concerns of your neighbors and ask questions.
  3. Vote: Exercise your right to vote and choose candidates who represent your values and priorities.
  4. Volunteer: Support local organizations and campaigns that align with your interests.
  5. Advocate: Contact your elected officials and express your views on issues that matter to you.

Empowering Change

Remember, local government is a reflection of our community. By understanding the different positions, engaging in the process, and exercising our democratic rights, we can ensure our voices are heard and contribute to a brighter future for everyone. Don’t underestimate the power of your involvement!
