Orange County Head Start Guest Readers Month

Guest Readers Month

April marks the annual celebration of Guest Readers Month for Orange County Head Start, a cherished tradition that brings community members into classrooms to share the joy of reading with young learners. During the 2025 campaign, the program continues to build on its mission of promoting early childhood literacy and fostering community engagement. This year, guest readers included Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings and our very own, Heather Parker!

In 2024, the initiative set an ambitious goal of attracting 1,000 guest readers to its 23 Head Start centers, aiming to surpass the previous year’s record of over 860 volunteers. These guest readers included local leaders such as Congressman Darren Soto and Orange County Administrator Byron Brooks, who joined a diverse group of volunteers in reading to the more than 1,500 children enrolled in the program.

Guest Readers Month offers a unique opportunity for individuals from all walks of life—community leaders, elected officials, local celebrities, and everyday residents—to engage directly with students. By stepping into the classroom, volunteers gain insight into the impactful work of Head Start and often develop lasting relationships that extend beyond the event itself.

The roots of this initiative trace back nearly 30 years, evolving from a week-long event into a month-long celebration due to its popularity and success. The program was initially introduced by Literacy Coordinator Katie Finnerty, whose passion for reading inspired staff, parents, and children alike. Today, Guest Readers Month stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to nurturing a love for literacy among its youngest members.
