Gulf Coast Beaches

Gulf Coast beaches are known for their clear water and white, powdery sand. Here is a round-up of our favorite Gulf Coast beaches within driving distance from Horizon West.

Clearwater Beach

Distance from Horizon West: Approximately 2 hours, 100 miles.

Clearwater Beach is a must-visit destination renowned for its soft, powdery white sand and vibrant atmosphere. The beach features a bustling boardwalk lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, making it ideal for families and solo travelers alike. What sets Clearwater apart is its stunning sunsets—head to Pier 60 every evening for live music!

Tip for a Great Day: Arrive early to secure a good parking spot. Clerawater beach is beautiful and extremly popular. During peak season, parking and beach spots fill up and can be very busy.

Siesta Key Beach

Distance from Horizon West: Approximately 2 hours, 130 miles.

Siesta Key Beach is famous for its incredibly fine, quartz-crystal sand that stays cool even under the hot Florida sun. This beach is perfect for those seeking a relaxed and serene atmosphere. Its crystal-clear waters and spacious shore provide ample room for beachgoers, and it’s known for being family-friendly and safe. Additionally, the nearby Siesta Village offers charming shops and eateries to explore.

Tip for a Great Day: Go early in the morning or during weekdays to avoid crowds. Bring your own beach gear, as rentals can be pricey. Pack a picnic to enjoy while soaking up the sun, and be sure to explore the Siesta Village for some delicious local cuisine!

Fort DeSoto Park Beach

Distance from Horizon West: Approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, 100 miles.

Fort De Soto Park offers not just beautiful beaches but also fantastic fishing opportunities! With designated fishing spots and a wealth of wildlife to observe, it’s perfect for both passionate anglers and nature lovers. The park features trails, picnic areas, camping areas, a fort, and a museum.  

Tip for a Great Day: Bring your fishing gear and check local regulations for fishing licenses. Explore the park’s trails and enjoy a picnic while soaking in the natural beauty surrounding you!

Atlantic Coast Beaches

The Atlantic coast is closer in proximity to Horizon West, making it the preferred direction for many locals. Here is a round-up of our favorites and some great tips to keep in mind.

Daytona Beach

Distance from Horizon West: Approximately 1 hour 17 minutes, 77 miles.

Daytona Beach is iconic for its hard-packed sand that allows vehicles to drive on the beach, making it unique compared to others. This energetic beach is known not only for its sun and surf but also for its events like the Daytona 500, making it a hub of excitement. The boardwalk features arcades, shops, and eateries, creating a lively atmosphere for visitors.

Because of its popularity, Daytona Beach can be busy and is considered a more touristy destination. Many locals choose to avoid it for this reason. But if you’re looking for a great spot that includes lots of restaurant options and entertainment within walking distance, Daytona is a great place to be. There are also plenty of public restrooms, a free splash pad, and free public parking just off the beach. There is a daily fee to drive onto the beach, or a Volusia County annual pass can be purchased for unlimited access throughout the year.

Tips for a Great Day: If you plan to drive on the beach, arrive early to find the best spots and avoid peak traffic times, 4-wheel drive is recommended. Check conditions ahead of time, the beach closes to traffic at certain times of the day and certain seasons. 

New Smyrna Beach

Distance from Horizon West: Approximately 1 hour and 14 minutes, 76 miles.

Just a short drive from Daytona, New Smyrna Beach offers a more laid-back experience while still maintaining vibrant beach culture. Known for its excellent surfing conditions and charming historic district, this beach is a favorite among locals. The beach itself provides scenic spots with nature preserves nearby, perfect for those wanting to experience Florida’s biodiversity.

Many sections of New Smyrna also allow vehicles on the beach. You can purchase a daily pass or an annual pass. Keep in mind, New Smyrna is also known as the “shark bite capital of the world.” Surfers frequently come in contact with small sharks further out from shore. This may be the reason it is not as popular with tourists and considered more of a hidden gem to locals.

We love heading for the Ponce Inlet beach area of New Smyrna. This is a very secluded section of beach with a nice bath house and a fishing pier.

Tip for a Great Day: Bring a surfboard or rent one locally to catch some waves, as New Smyrna is often less crowded than neighboring beaches. Explore the nearby Canova Beach Park for a quieter, nature-focused experience. Also, don’t forget to check out the local shops and eateries in the historic downtown area after a day on the beach!

 

Cocoa Beach

Distance from Horizon West: Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, 77 miles.

Cocoa Beach is home to the largest Ron Jon Surf Shop, making it a popular destination for surfers and tourists. As part of the “Space Coast,” it’s also a great location to catch a rocket launch from the nearby, Cape Canaveral. Kenedy Space Station is located just North of Cocoa, so you’ll have a pretty good view from the beach.
