Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort is one of the biggest Halloween events in Central Florida, but if you show up without a plan, you can spend most of the night standing in line.
For Horizon West locals, the good news is that HHN is close enough to make a full night of it without turning it into a vacation.
Here are the insider tips that actually matter.
Get There Early
This is the biggest tip.
If you have daytime park admission plus an HHN ticket, use Stay & Scream so you can remain inside Universal Studios while the park transitions into Halloween Horror Nights.
That gives you a head start before the main evening crowd enters.
Universal also offers a Scream Early Ticket for guests who do not have regular daytime admission.
If you want to do as many houses as possible, early entry makes a huge difference.

Don’t Automatically Start With the Biggest House
Everyone sees the most famous IP on the lineup and heads there first.
That can create an instant giant wait.
Instead, watch the Universal Orlando app and knock out houses with shorter waits first. Save the headline house for later if the line is already exploding.
Express Can Be Worth It
HHN Express is expensive, but on a busy night it can completely change your experience.
It is purchased separately from your HHN admission.
One good trick: if you have Express but a house has a short standby wait early in the night, use standby first and save your Express access for later.
That gives you a chance to experience a favorite house twice.
Stay Late
If you can make it until closing, do it.
Crowds often begin thinning late at night, and waits can become much more manageable during the final hour.
A house that looked impossible earlier may suddenly become realistic.
In other words:
Do not give up at midnight.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
This is not the night for cute shoes.
You will walk a lot, and some house queues include long backstage routes that are not obvious from the park map.
Wear broken-in sneakers.
Your feet will absolutely matter by hour five.
Dress for Florida Weather
Your brain says Halloween.
Florida says humidity.
Wear lightweight clothing and check the weather before leaving home.
A small poncho can also be useful during storm season.
Costumes and costume masks are not permitted during regular HHN event nights.

Download the Universal Orlando App
You’ll use it constantly for:
- Haunted house wait times
- Park maps
- Showtimes
- Ride waits
- Dining information
Do not get too attached to a rigid plan.
If a nearby house suddenly drops to a short wait, go.
Eat Before the Biggest Rush
HHN has a lot of specialty food, but you do not want to waste the best early house time sitting down for a long dinner.
Eat a solid meal before the event or early in the evening, then snack throughout the night.
Themed food is part of the fun. It just should not cost you three haunted houses.
Don’t Skip the Original Houses
The movie and TV houses get most of the attention, but Universal’s original haunted houses are often some of the best of the entire event.
You do not need to recognize the title.
Go in blind.
That is half the fun.
Slow Down in the Scare Zones
Do not just power-walk through them.
Scare zones are better when you hang around and watch the performers interact with guests.
They also change throughout the night as the crowd and atmosphere shift.
And yes, the scare actors will get close.
They are not supposed to touch you, and you should never touch them.
Use Shows as a Strategic Break
If house waits spike, that is a good time to see one of HHN’s live shows.
It gives you a chance to sit down, cool off and rest your feet without wasting the night.
Then jump back into houses when waits begin moving again.
Don’t Prioritize Regular Rides
Some Universal attractions stay open during HHN.
But if you only have one night, remember:
You can ride The Mummy another day.
You cannot experience this year’s haunted houses once HHN ends.
Houses first. Rides if you have time.
Go With a Small Group If Possible
Large groups move slowly.
Someone always needs food.
Someone always needs the bathroom.
Someone always disappears.
Before the night starts, have everyone choose their top three must-do houses.
Prioritize those first.
If the group wants completely different things, split up and meet later.
Know Before You Bring Kids
Universal states that Halloween Horror Nights may be too intense for young children and does not recommend the event for children under 13.
HHN includes gore, loud noises, darkness, scare actors and mature themes.
This is definitely not Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.
Our Simplest HHN Game Plan
Before you go: Buy tickets, consider Express, download the app, wear comfortable shoes and choose your top three houses.
Early evening: Use Stay & Scream if possible and knock out short waits fast.
Peak hours: Eat, explore scare zones, see a show and shop.
Late night: Go back into house mode and take advantage of falling wait times.
The Biggest HHN Tip of All
Have a strategy, but do not turn the entire night into a race.
The fog, the scare zones, the ridiculous food, the screaming and the atmosphere are part of the experience too.
For Horizon West residents, Halloween Horror Nights is close enough to be one of the easiest major Halloween experiences to do in Central Florida.
So get there early.
Stay late.
Wear good shoes.
And never trust anyone holding a chainsaw.
