Free Resources from the Orange County Library
A public library is more than just a building—it’s a gateway to knowledge, creativity, and community. The Orange County Library System (OCLS) is so much more than just a place to borrow the latest bestseller. With a treasure trove of free resources, classes, and technology, OCLS is a dynamic community hub that enriches lives in countless ways. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a budding chef, or a new driver, OCLS has something for everyone. Plus, the upcoming Horizon West branch promises to take things to the next level. Let’s dive into all the incredible things you can do—for free!
Cutting-Edge Technology at Your Fingertips
One of the most exciting aspects of OCLS is its commitment to providing access to the latest technology. Did you know that some branches offer access to 3D printers and laser engravers? Imagine creating your own custom-designed objects or etching intricate patterns into wood and acrylic—all at no cost beyond materials! These maker spaces are ideal for hobbyists, entrepreneurs, and anyone curious about modern fabrication techniques.
Another tech gem at OCLS is the driver’s education simulator. For new drivers or those looking to sharpen their skills, this simulator offers a safe and realistic environment to practice driving scenarios. It’s perfect for teens preparing to hit the road or adults brushing up on their skills.
Classes and Workshops for Every Interest
OCLS offers a plethora of classes and workshops catering to diverse interests. Are you an aspiring chef? Check out their cooking classes, where you can learn new recipes, essential techniques, and tips from skilled instructors. From mastering homemade pasta to perfecting decadent desserts, these hands-on classes are both fun and educational.
For the creatively inclined, the library’s art and craft workshops offer chances to explore painting, knitting, digital design, and more. If fitness is more your thing, some branches even host yoga and wellness sessions. The library system’s dedication to lifelong learning is evident in the wide range of subjects covered.
Lifelong Learning and Professional Development
Need to boost your career? OCLS offers career skills workshops where you can learn everything from resume writing to mastering software like Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud. With their language learning programs, you can also pick up a new language through immersive, interactive lessons. Plus, their coding and computer classes make technical skills accessible to everyone.
Family and Youth Programs
Families love OCLS for its extensive offerings geared toward children and teens. Storytimes, STEM activities, and book clubs are just the beginning. Older kids and teens can participate in coding camps, game design workshops, and even teen advisory boards that help shape library programming.
