When some people hear American Legion, they picture an old building, a bar, a pool table and a room filled mostly with veterans from generations past.
Horizon West American Legion Post 419 is rewriting that picture.
Founded in June 2023, Post 419 was created to give veterans living in the rapidly growing Horizon West community something many realized was missing: a place to find one another.
Not necessarily a physical place.
A community.
And in just a few years, Horizon West American Legion Post 419 has grown into an active network connecting local veterans with resources, friendships, service opportunities and the greater Horizon West community.
A New American Legion for a Newer Community
Horizon West may be one of Central Florida’s newer communities, but thousands of the people who call it home bring decades of life experiences with them.
That includes military service.
Post 419 was officially chartered in the summer of 2023 after local veterans saw an opportunity to create an American Legion presence specifically for Horizon West. Within its first year, the Post had already grown to more than 50 members. Florida American Legion membership data from early 2024 showed Post 419 at more than 333% of its initial membership goal.
Today, Post 419 describes itself as one of the fastest-growing posts in its Florida district.
But growth isn’t really the most interesting part of the story.
It’s how they’re doing it.
There’s No Traditional Post Building, and That’s Kind of the Point
Post 419 does not operate from the kind of traditional American Legion hall many people might expect.
Instead, the Post meets and gathers throughout the Horizon West community.
The American Legion’s current District 6 information lists Post 419 as having no post home, with meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month. Post 419 says that instead of seeing the lack of a building as a limitation, it sees it as freedom to be out in the community.
That’s a pretty good fit for Horizon West.
Members gather at local restaurants, breweries, businesses and community spaces. They host member meetings, veteran networking events, social hours and other gatherings designed less around sitting inside a headquarters and more around building relationships.
Their own philosophy says it best:
It’s not about the location. It’s about the relationships.
More Than Meetings
For veterans, finding people who understand military life can matter long after active service ends.
That’s one of the biggest roles Post 419 is trying to fill.
The organization hosts regular social events where veterans can connect without the pressure of a formal program or ceremony. Some members attend often. Others may simply know there’s a group available when they need it.
Recent Post 419 programming has included:
- Monthly member meetings
- Veteran networking socials
- Veteran social hours
- Veterans Bible Study gatherings
- Community service projects
- Patriotic events
- Youth programs
- Veteran resource assistance
- Veteran-to-veteran mentorship
That social side matters.
Post 419 isn’t only trying to help veterans find resources.
It’s helping them find their people.
Helping Veterans Navigate What Comes After Service
The American Legion has spent more than a century advocating for veterans and military families, and Post 419 brings that mission down to the neighborhood level.
Locally, the Post helps veterans connect with resources including veterans assistance, benefits navigation, family support, career guidance and veteran-to-veteran mentorship.
For someone leaving military service, moving to a new community or simply realizing years later that they need assistance navigating veterans’ programs, having another veteran nearby who understands the system can make a major difference.
And you don’t necessarily have to walk into an office to find that connection.
You might meet them at a Horizon West event.
You’ve Probably Already Seen Post 419 Around Town
Even if you’re not a veteran, there’s a good chance you’ve crossed paths with Post 419.
Members regularly participate in community events and have appeared at gatherings including Horizon West Fest, community car events and veteran-focused celebrations.
One of the Post’s early signature community events was a Veterans Day Walk/Ruck, created in partnership with Home State Brewing Co.
Veterans and community members were invited to walk, run or ruck together from Home State Brewing Co. to Bass Park and back, with proceeds supporting veterans as well as American Legion youth and community programs.
That’s the Post 419 model in a nutshell:
Get veterans together.
Invite the community in.
Create a connection.
Then use that connection to do some good.
Honoring Veterans Through Wreaths Across America
One of Post 419’s most meaningful annual efforts is its participation in Wreaths Across America at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha.
The national program brings volunteers together each December to place wreaths on veterans’ graves while emphasizing three principles: remember those who died, honor those who served and teach younger generations about the value of freedom.
Post 419’s involvement has grown quickly.
In 2023, approximately 250 wreaths were placed through the effort. By the following year, that number had grown to more than 800 wreaths.
By 2025, members were working toward the much larger goal of honoring more than 2,500 veterans buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
It’s also become an opportunity for younger members of the Horizon West community to get involved.
Local teenager Ethan Tasior spent hours identifying and cataloging veteran gravesites at Woodlawn to help support the Post’s Wreaths Across America efforts.
Post 419 is continuing the program in 2026, with this year’s National Wreaths Across America Day scheduled for December 19, 2026 at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Investing in the Next Generation
Serving veterans is only one piece of the American Legion mission.
Children and youth are one of the organization’s traditional pillars, and Post 419 has made youth involvement part of its local work as well.
The Post supports programs connected to:
- Junior ROTC
- Scouting
- Boys State and Girls State
- Scholarships
- Youth leadership
- Patriotic education
Earlier Post plans also included helping local Junior ROTC and Sea Cadet programs with equipment and supporting scholarships and educational grants through community partnerships.
It’s another way the organization connects military service with the larger community rather than keeping the two worlds separate.
A $9,000 Community Show of Support
That connection was especially visible during the inaugural Hamlin All-American Flag Parade in June 2026.
The event brought families, veterans, students, businesses and community organizations together for a one-mile flag walk, patriotic ceremony, live music and activities celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
Proceeds from the event benefited Horizon West American Legion Post 419 and its work supporting local veterans and patriotic programs.
The result?
$9,000 raised for Post 419.
For a Post that’s only been around since 2023, that’s a pretty powerful example of how quickly Horizon West has embraced its local veteran community.
Leadership That’s Already Being Recognized
Post 419’s work has earned recognition beyond Horizon West, too.
Founding member Jessica Makin helped establish the Post after becoming involved with the Horizon West Veterans community shortly after moving to the area.
In 2024, Makin received The American Legion Department of Florida’s Legionnaire of the Year award. Her work included serving as Second Vice Commander and Public Relations Officer, developing the Post’s Wreaths Across America involvement and working with Hire Heroes USA.
She was also recognized locally as one of Horizon West Magazine’s Who’s Who of Horizon West honorees for her work connecting veterans through social, volunteer and community opportunities.
Post 419 itself was also named runner-up for Best Post Public Relations Program among more than 280 American Legion posts across Florida in 2024.
Who Can Get Involved?
You don’t have to be a Post 419 member to support what they’re doing.
The organization works with veterans, military families, local businesses, schools, civic groups and community members throughout Horizon West.
Veterans interested in membership can connect directly with Post 419 to learn about eligibility and upcoming meetings.
Community members can also:
- Volunteer at veteran-focused events

Post 419 currently meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 PM, according to the American Legion’s Florida District 6 directory. Because the Post does not maintain a traditional permanent hall, locations and individual events may vary.

Veterans Strengthening Horizon West
Horizon West talks a lot about community.
This is what that word looks like in practice.
It’s veterans helping other veterans navigate life after military service.
It’s families placing wreaths on graves in December.
It’s teenagers learning the stories behind the names on headstones.
It’s a networking social at a neighborhood restaurant.
It’s a flag parade through Hamlin that raises thousands of dollars to support people who served.
And it’s a group that decided it didn’t need four walls and a sign out front to create a place where veterans belong.
Horizon West American Legion Post 419 isn’t simply building a Post.
They’re building a veteran community right here at home. 🇺🇸
