Because June marks Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to shine a spotlight on a group of men that are quietly changing lives right here in Horizon West.
If you’ve ever driven through Hamlin in the early morning hours before the sun comes up, you might have spotted a group of men gathering on the green space near Cinépolis. They are lifting cinder blocks, running sprints, sweating through push-ups, and laughing in the dark.
This isn’t a high-priced boot camp or a trendy new gym membership. This is Horizon Heat, the local branch of F3 Nation, and it might just be one of the most impactful men’s mental health initiative in West Orange County.
“One of the things we care most about is creating a positive space where men can build real friendships, support one another, and become better able to show up for their families and community.” -Sergio Bastos (Horizon Heat)

What Exactly is F3?
To understand Horizon Heat, you first have to understand the global movement behind it. Founded in North Carolina in 2011, F3 has grown exponentially across the United States. The name represents three simple but profound core pillars: Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith.
F3 is explicitly non-denominational. In the world of F3, “Faith” isn’t defined by a specific religion or doctrine; rather, it is defined simply as a belief in something bigger than yourself and a commitment to serving your local community.
Every single F3 group operates under five non-negotiable core principles:
- It is always free of charge (no catches, no memberships, no hidden fees).
- It is open to all men (whether you are 18 or 80, a marathon runner, or completely out of shape).
- It is held outdoors, rain or shine, hot or cold (embracing the elements builds resilience).
- It is peer-led (there are no certified personal trainers; workouts are led by the men themselves on a rotating basis).
- Every workout ends with a “Circle of Trust” (the secret sauce where real connection happens).
When you combine these principles, you get a unique environment where the usual walls men build around themselves instantly come crumbling down.
Welcome to ‘Horizon Heat’ in Hamlin
The Winter Garden chapter of F3 is known as Horizon Heat. Its primary Area of Operations (or “AO” in F3 lingo) is located right in the heart of the Horizon West Town Center, at the green space next to Cinépolis (14141 Shoreside Way, Winter Garden, FL 34787).
While most of the Horizon West community is sound asleep, the men of Horizon Heat are waking up to meet in the “Gloom,” which is the F3 term for the dark, pre-dawn hours.
The workouts are tough, designed to push men physically. They utilize bodyweight exercises, running, and simple, inexpensive tools like cinder blocks. Because the workouts are completely scalable, no man is ever left behind.
But as any regular participant of Horizon Heat will tell you, the fitness is just the magnet that brings men to the field. The real magic happens afterward.

The 3 Fs: A Blueprint for Men’s Mental Health
Mental health struggles often thrive in isolation. Men are frequently conditioned to suppress anxiety, stress, depression, or feelings of loneliness, viewing them as signs of weakness. F3 intentionally dismantles this stigma by structuring its groups around the holistic well-being of its members.
1. Fitness: Releasing the Pressure Valve
The physical benefits of exercise on mental health are well-documented. Sweating through an intense, outdoor workout releases endorphins, reduces cortisol levels, and clears the mind. Starting the day with a physical victory gives men a sense of control and accomplishment before they even check their first work email.
2. Fellowship: Defeating Isolation
F3 operates on the principle that men bond more effectively when standing shoulder to shoulder, facing a challenge together, rather than face to face in a traditional social setting. Suffering through a tough workout in the Florida humidity creates an instant bond.
To break down social anxieties further, F3 uses a system of nicknames. When you join F3, you don’t use your real name or talk about your job title. You are given an “F3 Name” based on a fun fact or a funny story shared during your first workout. On the field, it doesn’t matter if you are a corporate executive, a construction worker, a teacher, or a stay-at-home dad. Everyone is equal.
3. Faith: Living with Purpose
The third pillar, Faith, shifts a man’s focus outward. F3 encourages men to become high-impact leaders in their local neighborhoods, workplaces, and families. Whether it’s organizing a local charity drive in West Orange County, helping a neighbor rebuild after a hurricane, or simply showing up as a more present and patient father and husband, Horizon Heat gives men a collective purpose. Knowing that your presence matters to a broader group provides a deep sense of psychological fulfillment.

Breaking the Stigma in Horizon West
Horizon West Happenings has always been a platform dedicated to fostering a supportive community environment. As we observe Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s vital to acknowledge that taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.
We often think of mental health resources as clinical, such as therapy offices, hotlines, and medical appointments. While those resources are absolutely vital and irreplaceable for those in crisis, preventative community groups like Horizon Heat serve as a crucial front line of defense. It is a space where men can find routine, physical health, accountability, and a genuine group of friends who will notice if they don’t show up.
If you have been feeling isolated, stressed, or just stuck in a monotonous routine, the solution might be waiting for you in Hamlin before the sun comes up.
“F3 is a national network of free, peer-led outdoor workout groups for men focused on fitness, fellowship, and community. Local groups like Horizon Heat here in Horizon West welcome men of all fitness levels and aim to create a supportive environment where men can connect, encourage one another, and build meaningful relationships both inside and outside of workouts.” -Sergio Bastos (Horizon Heat)
