Celebrating Black-Owned Businesses in Horizon West

Rebecca Larin Avatar

August is National Black Business Month, a time to recognize, celebrate, and intentionally support Black entrepreneurs who are making a lasting impact in their communities. First established in 2004, the month encourages consumers to discover Black-owned businesses, invest locally, and help create long-term economic opportunities through everyday spending.

Here in Horizon West, we’re fortunate to have incredible Black business owners who are building more than successful companies. They’re creating jobs, serving families, mentoring others, and helping shape the community we all call home.

This month, we’re proud to spotlight a few of the local businesses making a difference.

Kingdom Energy Solutions

Owned by Charlo Alexandre

Looking to make your home more energy efficient? Kingdom Energy Solutions is helping Central Florida homeowners explore solar energy solutions and home energy upgrades designed to reduce utility costs while increasing energy independence.

Beyond helping customers save on energy bills, Charlo and his team are passionate about educating homeowners throughout the process, making what can feel like a complicated investment much easier to understand.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore solar or ready to make the switch, Kingdom Energy Solutions is a local business dedicated to helping families make informed decisions for their homes.

Color Me Mine

Owned by Nedy Trent

Creativity brings people together, and Color Me Mine has become one of Horizon West’s favorite places to do just that.

Under Nedy Trent’s leadership, the studio has become a community gathering place where families, friends, date nights, birthday parties, and special celebrations come to life through pottery painting.

It’s more than an art studio. It’s a place where memories are made one brushstroke at a time.

Clean Eatz Winter Garden

Owned by Anthony Ferguson

Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean sacrificing convenience.

Clean Eatz offers made-to-order meals, weekly meal plans, grab-and-go options, smoothies, and catering for busy individuals and families looking to make healthier choices.

Anthony has created a welcoming space where wellness meets convenience, helping the Horizon West community stay fueled whether you’re headed to work, the gym, or home after a long day.

The Real Food Academy

Owned by Mercedes Gates

Food has an incredible way of bringing people together, and that’s exactly what Mercedes Gates is doing through The Real Food Academy.

Focused on hands-on cooking experiences and nutrition education, The Real Food Academy teaches children and families valuable life skills while making healthy eating fun and approachable.

From cooking classes and camps to interactive experiences, Mercedes is helping inspire the next generation to build confidence in the kitchen while creating lifelong healthy habits.

Anytime Fitness Horizon West

Owned by Kendrick McGill

Fitness is about far more than workouts. It’s about community, consistency, and helping people become their best selves.

Under Kendrick McGill’s leadership, Anytime Fitness has become a place where members feel supported no matter where they are in their fitness journey.

Whether someone is stepping into a gym for the very first time or training toward their next personal goal, Kendrick and his team have created an encouraging environment focused on long-term health and wellness.

Gertrude’s Kitchen

Owned by Shonda Singleton

Great food has a way of bringing people together, and that’s exactly what Shonda Singleton does through Gertrude’s Kitchen. Specializing in full-service catering, event planning, and custom desserts, Gertrude’s Kitchen helps make weddings, corporate events, birthdays, and celebrations across Central Florida unforgettable.

Why Supporting Local Matters

Our community is stronger because of the entrepreneurs who choose to build their dreams here. This August, we encourage you to discover someone new, revisit a favorite local business, and celebrate the diversity, talent, and passion that make Horizon West such a special place to live.
